Use of English Word Formation: Exercises with Key; Grammar Levels B2-C1 (English Edition)

Word formation plays an important role in part three ‘Use of English’ in the Cambridge exams

What is word formation?Word formation is the derivational process that enables words to change their grammatical categories, that is, from one part of speech to another – such as from a verb to a noun or a noun to an adjective etc.
Prefixes are syllables added to the beginning of words from the same family to change their grammatical function while suffixes are attached to the end.
Words formed by adding a prefix or a suffix are derivative words, e.g. untrue – un + true, sadness, sad + ness, while those without prefixes or suffixes are primitive words, e.g. true, sad.
When a word is made up of two or more elements, the principle element of the word is called the base. E.g. unhappy, happy being the base word.
By familiarising yourself with those tiny affixes, you can greatly increase your vocabulary by forming new words.
Some words may require both a prefix and a suffix and some may even require two suffixes or a prefix and two suffixes.
By understanding the patterns of word formation, you will soon be able to express yourself much more precisely. Not only, you will also be able to enrich your writing, and have a deeper comprehension of the English language.
It is important to pay careful attention to context: Understanding the meaning of a new word often depends on the context in which it is used. Look for clues in the surrounding words and sentences to help you deduce the meaning of a word with a prefix or suffix.
With prefixes and suffixes, you can acquire lots of new words and become a confident English speaker.
The book consists of two parts. Part one shows charts with all derivations of a given base word with exercises to put each word into context. The exercises in part two deal with specific topics with 12 sentences per topic, with a base word at the end of each sentence to transform. Hyperlinks included to jump to the answers and back to the exercises.
The final section of the book focuses on commonly used prefixes and suffixes with example words.
Grammar revision throughout the book by way of the example sentences.
